Until 2003 BKE Vice President Reavis (Rev) Mitchell was leading a double life as both a U.S. government computer scientist and an award-winning Hip Hop artist and producer. During his tenure with the U.S. Geological Survey, Rev was one of the scientists and programmers who helped adapt Global Positioning Systems (GPS) from a purely military application to civilian uses. Rev’s data is used in Geographical Information Systems worldwide, helping us find our way and fostering a new industry.
As a music producer and founder of Soulbeat Productions, Rev earned nine ADDY Awards for his work on successful ad campaigns for clients like Coca-Cola, The National Soft Drink Association, McDonalds, Fifth Third Bank, and USA Networks. His own Hip Hop group, Utopia State, was awarded the 1999 Nashville Music Award for Hip Hop Album of the Year for Where Y’all From.
Rev also garnered a 2005 Detroit Music Award (DMA) for Outstanding Urban Funk/Hip Hop Recording, and Soul-Patrol.com’s Funk Album of the Year Award for his production on Nadir’s Distorted Soul 2.0. He picked up a second DMA in 2008 for his contributions to Nadir's Slave: The Remixtape which was named Outstanding Electronic/Dance Recording.
Rev earned his B.S. in Computer Science (1994) and Masters in public Administration (1997) from Tennessee State University in Nashville.
